Aiken County is located in South Carolina and has a total estimated population of 160,099 residents as of the 2010 Census. During the 1870s a lot of political tension rose in South Carolina. Aiken County was one of the areas that suffered a lot of violent attacks against Black Republicans in the time leading up to the 1876 elections. These attacks were intended to suppress the black vote. More than 100 black men were killed by white paramilitary groups in Aiken County during the Hamburg Massacre in July of 1876.
